Top Breastfeeding Myths

Many new (or to-be!) moms have questions, concerns and doubts regarding breastfeeding. Here are the top 5 breastfeeding myths that I hear:⁠⠀

1) 'My baby wants to feed often so my supply must be too low'

One of the most common reasons mothers stop breastfeeding is they believe that their milk supply is low. Some signs that we associate with low milk supply like crying, feeding often, being unable to express milk or shrinking breast size aren't always reliable indicators of low milk supply.⁠ It's important to check in with your ND or lactation consultant to help you determine if your milk supply is actually low. The good news is there are lots of things we can do to boost your supply it if that's the case.⁠⠀

2) Pain is normal.⁠⠀

Although some discomfort is common the first few weeks after birth, breastfeeding shouldn’t hurt! Nipple pain may be a sign that your baby isn't latching properly. Having an lactation-competent practitioner can help you with the proper latch right from the start.⁠⠀

3) Having small breasts or breasts that don't grow a lot during pregnancy means you won't be able to breastfeed.⁠⠀

Breast size is not an indicator of milk supply. Women with all breast sizes can usually breastfeed just fine. There is no 'perfect size' for breastfeeding.⁠⠀

4) Working out will affect milk supply or the taste.⁠⠀

Despite the rumours, this is not true! The other concern is that working out will change the taste of the milk and baby won't like it. Studies have shown there is no change in milk volume or macronutrient content with exercise. ⁠Ensure that uou eat adequate calories and staying hydrated, especially right after a workout.⁠⠀

5) You didn't try hard enough if you don't breastfeed.⁠⠀

First of all, there is no 'right' way to feed your baby. Breastfeeding, doesn’t always work out and there are a multitude of reasons why a mother may choose not to (or is unable to) breastfeed. No mother should feel guilt, shame or disappointment for not breastfeeding. ⁠⠀
